Joe Young Shows COBA Students What They Can Do (January 2025)

On Thursday, January 30, Charter Oak Boxing Academy welcomed award winning artist and filmmaker Joe Young for an inspiring and creative experience that showed students what is possible when talent, discipline, and purpose come together.

Joe Young, president of Joe Young Entertainment and creator of the CAN DO program, shared his personal journey as a Black cartoonist, filmmaker, director, producer, and teaching artist. Students learned how his passion for storytelling evolved into a multifaceted career that spans comics, film, education, and community engagement.

Event Details

During the presentation, Young spoke about his work with major artists including Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, offering students a glimpse into the professional creative world and the dedication required to succeed in it. He also highlighted his role as the creator of Kemet, the Time Traveler, a socially engaged comic property rooted in culture, history, and imagination.

Students were also introduced to Young’s work in film, including Diamond Ruff, Hartford’s first major homegrown book to film project. The movie, which received national distribution and is currently available on Tubi, served as a powerful example of how local stories can reach global audiences.

A highlight of the day was the performing arts component of Young’s program. Performers joined him at COBA, bringing energy, creativity, and live artistic expression into the space. This interactive element allowed students to see how the arts can be collaborative, expressive, and deeply connected to community.

Commitment to Youth

Young also spoke about his role as a trustee at the University of Bridgeport, encouraging students to think about higher education and creative pathways as part of their future. Families and younger children were welcomed to attend, reinforcing the idea that inspiration and access should extend beyond the gym and into the home.

From holding a Guinness World Record for creating the world’s longest comic strip to receiving the Daily Point of Light Award from the White House, Joe Young’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to creativity, service, and youth empowerment. His visit left COBA students with a clear message. With belief, effort, and imagination, they can do it.
